Winter is the long chapter in St. Armand: dark by four, Whiteface standing white over the ridgeline, and a cold that keeps whatever falls exactly where it landed. Boulder Landscaping works both ends of that year — plowing driveways, clearing walks and steps and pushing back the banks through the snow months, then mowing, trimming, edging and tidying yards during the brief, brilliant green in between. The growing season up here can be twelve weeks of pure urgency, while plowing can begin in October and still be going in April, so the equipment barely gets a rest. There is a hard-won pleasure in a mountain driveway opened wide before sunrise, and another in a north-country lawn cut level in July once the black flies have finally given up. Two seasons, one set of hands, the same road home.
