Snow does not fall politely in southern Erie County — it arrives in bands off the lake and stacks up faster than a shovel can argue with. Giordano's excavation meets that with machines: plowing driveways and lots, pushing back the banks once they crowd the pavement, opening long farm lanes and turnarounds, and hauling snow out when there is nowhere left to put it. Along Route 39 the wind runs the open fields and rebuilds a drift across a driveway an hour after it was cleared, so the same road can need two passes before breakfast. There is a specific satisfaction in a wide, square-cut opening with the banks knocked back and room enough to turn a truck around. When the band finally shuts off and the sun comes out over the fields, it is blinding, and everything is where it should be.
