Between the Ithaca hills and the Susquehanna country, Spencer keeps to its own valley, with Catatonk Creek running through it and the evening light coming in long and level. Scenic Landscape mows and trims across that stretch of the year, working the yards on the creek flats and the ones set up on the shoulders where the grass comes in thinner and slower. There is a right hour to cut a lawn in July, usually after the heat has let go, when the blades stand up and the clippings fly clean. Edging the walks, trimming the posts and the tree rings, then the fall run of leaf cleanup as the hills change over. It is work that repeats, and a lawn finished at dusk always looks better than one finished at noon.
