A January storm on the North Fork comes in sideways with salt in it, and Southold wakes to drifts packed hard against the garage doors. Jon Lake and Son's Property Maintenance Inc runs both halves of the year here — plowing, shoveling, and clearing drives and walks through winter, then mowing, trimming, edging and seasonal cleanups once the ground thaws. Winter work is measured in first light: how many places are open before anyone needs them to be. Summer work is measured in lines, and the pleasure turns out to be much the same either way. The route runs through Southold and on to Greenport, East Marion, Orient, Peconic and Cutchogue.
