The first mow of the year is a small holiday. Somewhere in April, out along Deerfield where Millstone Brook runs low under the road, the grass finally means it and the mowers come off the trailer. Lewis Lawn and Landscaping opens the Southampton season there — cleanup first, winter debris pulled off the lawn and beds cleared, then the cut, the edge, the trim. From April into November it is a weekly return: mulch in spring, leaves in fall, hedges held in line the whole way through. A yard picked up and cut for the first time smells like the year starting.
