American Turf Care

About American Turf Care

Sea fog rolls in over the fields off Flying Point on a June morning and lies in the grass until the sun burns it away around nine. American Turf Care is out in it, reading how Southampton turf came through the night — where it's thick, where the sand underneath has pulled the moisture down, where a bare patch is asking for seed. Mowing is only half the work; the rest is aeration, overseeding, feeding and the patience to let a lawn thicken from the roots up. Between the old potato ground and the ocean, grass grows on borrowed footing, and it repays anyone who tends it on a schedule. By the time the fog lifts, the stripes are laid down and the turf is standing up green.
