In the middle of Somers there is an elephant — cast in bronze, standing on a granite shaft outside the old Elephant Hotel, left over from the town's circus days. LANDSCAPES mows within sight of it and out along every road that leaves the hamlet: weekly cutting, edging, trimming, spring and fall cleanups. Midsummer noon here is loud with insects, and the smell of cut grass carries three yards down the street. The best part is the reveal — an hour of noise, then silence, then a lawn with clean lines running all the way to the road. Somers and the towns beside it are on the schedule.
