Winter arrives here sideways. Lake Ontario stays open long after the fields have frozen, and the bands come ashore over Sodus with the wind behind them, filling a driveway twice in one night. D&R Lawn and Snow Removal is out in that, plowing and shoveling between the village and Sodus Bay so the first car of the morning backs out onto bare pavement, walks salted right to the door. Come May the same trucks trade the blade for the mower, and the year turns to weekly cutting, trimming and cleanups. Two halves of one calendar, both of them spent outdoors.
