Bread and Cheese Hollow Road climbs out of Smithtown toward Fort Salonga past stone walls older than most of the houses behind them. In April, Heritage Design Group Inc is on those properties with rakes and blowers, pulling winter out of the beds and giving the lawn its first cut of the year. From there the season settles into weekly mowing, trimming and edging, with the leaf work waiting at the far end of it. Older ground and mature plantings ask for a lighter touch than new construction, and the crew works that way. The result is a place that looks tended rather than manicured — which, on these roads, is exactly right.
