The Chenango valley holds cold the way a bowl holds water, and a Sherburne morning in January can come in ten degrees under whatever Route 12 promised up on the hill. Buckley's Excavating runs the plow through that, opening driveways and clearing lots while the village is still dark and the river is steaming. Valley snow comes heavy and wet one week and dry as flour the next, and a blade gets set differently for each. What matters is that a farm lane is passable at chore time and a shop door is reachable before anyone turns up to open it. A drive scraped down to the gravel, the whole lane open end to end, is the job finished properly.
