The first real snow of December usually finds the Wallkill still steaming, the river warmer than the air, fog standing over the bends at daybreak. Duffy's Outdoor Services is already moving by then, plowing driveways and parking areas, shoveling steps and walkways, laying salt where the shade keeps things frozen all day. Valley cold sits low and lingers, so whatever melts at noon comes back hard by dusk and the clearing has to account for it. A drive taken down to the gravel and a path you can walk in ordinary shoes — that is the shape of a good winter morning here.
