Long before the locks on the Cayuga-Seneca open for the boating season, winter has its own schedule in Seneca Falls, and it usually arrives overnight. Dad and Son plows and shovels through it — driveways, walkways, the salted path from the door to the car — so the morning starts on time instead of starting with a shovel. When the thaw finally comes and the canal water goes moving again, the same trucks turn to mowing, trimming and yard cleanups. It makes a full circle of work: clear in winter, cut in summer, tidy in between. The reward is small and repeated, a driveway opened before the coffee is done and a lawn squared off at the curb.
