A clove is a fold in the land, and Schodack has plenty of them — creases where the ground drops away from the Hudson and the morning mist takes its time leaving. Clove Hollow Landscape Company keeps the grass in those hollows and on the flats above them, mowing, trimming and edging yard by yard as the valley turns from pale green to deep. Out toward Muitzeskill the fields run right up to the mowing line, and there is real satisfaction in the moment the last pass closes and a lawn reads as one whole piece. Cleanups come in spring and again in fall, when the maples let go all at once. It is unhurried work on old ground, done for the pleasure of a yard that looks cared for from the road.
