Erie Boulevard runs on the filled-in bed of the old canal, and on a January night it carries nothing but streetlight and sideways snow. That hour belongs to KLB Snow Plowing & Salting: three in the morning, wipers slapping, blade down, a lot opening up one long pass at a time. Salt goes out behind the truck in a bright arc, and by the time the first headlights swing in, black pavement is showing again. Nobody watches this work being done, which is exactly the point — the morning gets to belong to everyone else. Plowing, clearing and ice control through Schenectady and the towns beside it.
