At four in the morning the west-side streets around Franklin Square are empty, blue and completely silent except for a plow. Divers Enterprises, LLC works those hours all winter, opening driveways and parking areas and cutting the banks back so the next storm has somewhere to go. Walks are shoveled and sanded, and the hard apron the town plow leaves at the end of a drive gets taken out too, because that is the part that traps people. Winters here run long and repeat themselves, so the season is less about one big storm than about all the ordinary ones. The reward is a street of open driveways at sunrise and nobody late for anything.
