Saranac Lake is a village of porches — deep old cure-cottage porches facing the street, small tended yards laid out in front of them, and Riverside Park down at the water. Willy Nilly Gardening looks after those yards: mowing, trimming around steps and fences and stone, edging, and the cleanups that bracket a short northern summer. The black flies thin out by late June and then the long bright working weeks arrive, cool again by dinnertime. A little village lawn, cut and trimmed and swept off at the curb, does a surprising amount for a whole block. Saranac Lake and the neighboring hamlets are on the list.
