Out toward Gabriels and Vermontville the country opens into old hayfields, and frost can find them in June and again by early September — a growing season with its shoulders pulled in. Adirondack Farm & Forest works inside that window, mowing on a tight rotation, trimming and edging, and clearing yards out in spring and once more before the ground hardens. Grass up here grows in a rush and then quits, and knowing when it will do each is most of the job. It counts for something to see a north-country lawn kept even and open right out to the tree line. Saranac Lake and the surrounding Franklin County towns are served through the green months.
