Salina sits where the old salt flats flatten out toward Onondaga Lake, and the lawns here grow the way that low, damp ground insists — fast, thick, and greener than they have any right to be by the second week of June. Vinnie's Grass Cutting & General Work keeps them in hand, working the yards off Route 11 and the tight blocks of Mattydale in the long light after supper, when the heat lets go and a mower can be heard two streets over. Grass cutting is the heart of it, along with the general work a property asks for between visits: trimming what the deck can't reach, running a clean line along the walks, carrying off what's left behind. There is a real satisfaction in that last pass, the edge so straight the whole yard seems to sit up a little.
