Saint Johnsville lies along the Mohawk, where the river, the canal and Route 5 all run the same line east and west through the valley. Semple Services works both halves of the year there: mowing, trimming and cleanups while the flats are green, plowing and salting once the wind comes down the valley and fills a driveway overnight. Summer work ends with a lawn edged tight to the sidewalk; winter work ends with a drive opened to the pavement before the commute begins. Mulch goes into the beds in May, leaves come off the grass in November, and the shovel finds the front steps in January. The area follows the valley through Saint Johnsville, Fort Plain, Dolgeville and Little Falls.
