Hydrangeas do something in Saint James they do not do everywhere — the north-shore air and the old fields out toward Mills Pond suit them, and by late June the blue is almost unreasonable. R.J.K. Gardens keeps the lawns around those beds in good order, mowing to a consistent height, trimming close where the mower cannot reach, edging so grass and garden each stay on their own side of the line. Garden-side work is patient work: a little every week, all season, and then one July morning the whole yard simply reads as finished. Cleanups do the heavy lifting twice a year, opening the ground up in April and putting it to bed in November. It is a small pride, and it is a real one.
