A February nor'easter announces itself over Saint James hours ahead of time: the sky above the open field at Deepwells goes the color of pewter and the wind swings hard to the northeast. Mazelis Landscape Contracting Corp. reads that sky, stages the trucks, then works the night through and into the gray morning — plowing drives, clearing lots, cutting a path to the front door, laying salt where ice wants to set. When the blades come off, the growing season is already close behind, and the same routes turn to mowing, trimming and hauling out the winter's wreckage. Saint James asks for both halves of the year, and both are worth doing properly. A cleared driveway and a cut lawn are the same promise in different weather.
