Roxbury lies along the East Branch of the Delaware River in the western Catskills, the same hills where the naturalist John Burroughs was born and to which he returned summer after summer late in life. In winter the valley fills with snow and the farm roads climbing out of it go quiet, and JNR Land Management keeps Roxbury's driveways and lanes clear so the town stays connected. Mountain snow can come sideways off the ridges and drift deep in the hollows, and clearing it means pushing back banks that will stand until April. A plowed lane winding up from the river road, white fields on either side and woodsmoke rising from a chimney, is the kind of winter scene Burroughs might have paused to write down.
