When a squall comes down the Northway corridor, Round Lake gets it in the dark and gets it sideways. Peak Environmental answers with plowing and clearing — drives opened, turnarounds cut, steps and walks shoveled and treated so the morning isn't an adventure. Village streets this narrow leave nowhere easy to put the snow, so where the banks end up is a decision rather than an accident. There's a stillness to the work at three in the morning: the lake somewhere out in the black, headlights, falling flakes, nothing else moving anywhere. Then daylight comes and everybody drives off like nothing ever happened.
