The Erie Canal goes still and shallow every winter, the towpath a white line running east out of the city while the rest of Rochester gets on with the business of moving snow. B-C Excavating, Inc. does the moving: plowing lots and drives, stacking banks where they will not blind a corner, shoveling walks, salting the ice that forms in a building's shade all afternoon. Equipment with some weight to it is a comfort at four in the morning when a squall has dropped six inches on a lot that has to open at seven. Nothing showy in the work — pavement where pavement belongs, and room to park by first light. That is the report the daylight gives, storm after storm.
