The first snow day of the year turns the streets north of downtown Riverhead into something out of an old photograph — school closed, sleds coming out, nobody in a hurry except the trucks. Israel Vidal Landscaping Inc. is one of those trucks, plowing driveways and lots, clearing paths and front steps, laying sand and salt on the pitch at the bottom of a block where cars like to slide. Storms out here often come in wet and settle heavy, then set up hard once the temperature drops behind them. So the work happens in passes: open it, come back, open it again once the wind has had its say. By the time the plows are gone, the town looks unbothered — which is exactly the intention.
