In June the Landsman Kill runs quiet behind the village and Rhinebeck's lawns green up under those broad Hudson Valley maples. Starkman Lawn Care keeps them that way — mowing week to week, edges cut in along the walks and drives, trimming close to fence posts and foundations, beds opened up and mulched. Spring begins with the winter's debris raked off; the season closes with leaves cleared before the first snow flattens them into the grass. Village lots and the wider properties out toward the fields call for different mowing lines, and both get their own. There is a particular pleasure in a Rhinebeck yard finished on a warm evening, striped and edged, with the light still up in the treetops.
