Rhinebeck wakes early in winter, and the storms here come in off the Catskills across the river, crossing the orchards before they ever reach the village. Northeast Lawn and Snow plows and shovels the long farm drives out toward Wurtemburg and the tight ones behind the white clapboard storefronts, so the first cars of the morning find pavement instead of guesswork. Come spring the same routes turn green: mowing, edging and cleanups along the stone walls and hedgerows that follow the Landsman Kill. There is a satisfaction in both halves of the year — a driveway cleared to the gravel before sunrise, a lawn cut in even lines while the fairgrounds fields go gold behind it. The river light does most of the decorating; the crew just keeps the ground beneath it tidy.
