Saturday morning, and the short blocks between Broadway and the rail line fill up with the sound of small engines. Minion Squad arrives in numbers — mowing, trimming around fences and posts, edging the walks, clearing beds and hauling off the clippings and brush, so a yard that got away from you all week is handled before lunch. Through the growing months that becomes a weekly loop; by October it is leaves, raked and blown and gone. Then the shovels and plows come out and the same crew opens driveways, clears steps and walkways, and salts the ice back into submission. A house should look looked-after from the sidewalk, and in this small Hudson-side city that is the entire idea.
