Red Creek took its name from the water winding through it on the way to Lake Ontario, and the country around the village is apple rows, hayfield and low black muck ground. Dubois Mowing and Trimming does precisely what the name says, week after week, from the first push in May to the last cut before the cold comes down off the lake. Yards out here run big and open and a machine can really travel; the joy is in the long uninterrupted pass and the tidy line where lawn gives way to field. Trimming is the finish work — around the mailbox, the porch step, the fence posts, the tree line — and it is what anyone actually sees.
