Halfway Brook threads quietly across Queensbury, slipping under road after road, and the neighborhoods that grew up along it have deep back lawns that run down toward the water. Cousins crew cuts mows and trims those yards, usually finishing in the last long light of a June evening when the air over the brook goes cool and the mosquitoes come out to supervise. Working close to a waterway means paying attention at the bottom of the slope — where the mower stops, where the trimmer takes over, what gets carried out instead of left. The payoff is a back lawn that stays usable right to the bank, edged and open, no ragged no-man's-land at the end of it. Two cuts later it still looks that way, which is rather the whole point.
