Long Island City keeps its own hours. At two in the morning the towers along Vernon Boulevard are half lit, the loading docks are quiet, and snow is still coming straight down over the gantries at the river's edge. Snow Swift moves through it quickly — lots plowed, entrances opened, walkways shoveled and treated before the first delivery truck noses in at five. Speed is the point of the name and the point of the work: a building whose doors are clear when the city wakes never has to think about the storm at all. By sunrise the piles are stacked out of the way and the pavement is black and drying.
