Pulaski keeps two clocks: the Salmon River, which fills the village with anglers and cold bright water, and Lake Ontario, which decides how much snow the winter will send. Gaffney's Lawn Care works both. From the first green push in May the mowers run the river-street lawns and the open yards out toward Richland, trimming tight to fences, edging the walks, and clearing spring's litter and autumn's leaves so the turf goes into the cold clean. Then the lake takes over, and the same yards need plowing, the walks need opening, and the icy patch by the back door needs salt before dark. Grass one half of the year and snow the other, on the same familiar ground.
