April in Pound Ridge arrives quietly: the Cross River running full, ferns pushing up in the shade, the lawn waking unevenly under a winter's worth of leaf litter. The Organic Yard opens those yards for the season with cleanups, borders raked and topped with mulch, and a first cut once the ground has firmed enough to hold a mower. From there it is weekly mowing and trimming through a summer of long shadows and short sun on the ridge lots. Autumn turns it around again — leaves off, edges cut back, the grass carried down into the cold looking tended rather than abandoned. Small lawns set in big woods repay that kind of attention, and they show it almost immediately.
