Turf is a crop like any other in this corner of Chautauqua County — it wants a sharp blade, the right height, and someone paying attention. Turftenders tends it: mowing on a rhythm the lawn can live with, string trimming into the corners a deck cannot reach, edging that draws the boundary between grass and drive, and cleanups at the front and back of the growing year. At noon in high summer, with Pomfret's orchards and vineyards baking a few fields over, a cut lawn is the coolest ground in the county. Stand on it barefoot and the fuss makes sense. Honest work, and it shows from the road.
