Midsummer in Pleasant Valley smells like cut grass and warm hay, and the open ground out by James Baird State Park holds its heat until well after supper. Daley's mows through it — weekly cutting, trimming, edging and seasonal cleanups on lawns around the hamlet and the roads that leave it. July is the month a lawn either holds or gives up, and holding it comes down to raising the deck, keeping the blade sharp and never stripping the crown when things go dry. Come evening, a freshly cut yard with clean lines along the drive is about as satisfying as this valley gets. Then it starts over on Monday.
