Early on a June morning the mist lifts off the Shawangunk Kill and the grass along the valley floor is heavy with dew — the hour when a mower leaves its cleanest line. Vellenga's Lawn Care, Inc. spends that season on the lawns of Pine Bush: mowing, edging along the walks, trimming close to posts and beds, clearing a yard down to bare green each spring and again once the leaves come down. Come winter the trucks change over, and the drives and lots get plowed, the paths shoveled, the ice treated before anyone steps out on it. It is satisfying to give back a yard so trim it seems to have grown that way, and just as satisfying to give back a driveway before the school bus comes. One town, both halves of the year.
