Along the Keuka Outlet the old mill sites have gone over to trees, and across the water Bluff Point rises between the two arms of the lake. Jim Covell and Son Tree Service works the yards and back lots on both sides of that outlet — tree removal where a trunk overhangs a garage, tree trimming to open a crown before it gets top-heavy, pruning that keeps a young shade tree from growing itself into trouble. Snow comes off the lake in bands and loads branches unevenly, which is how a crotch splits some night in February; storm damage cleanup follows, quiet and immediate. Harvest weather in September is the fine stretch here, warm days and cold nights, a good time to be up in a tree. The job is finished when the chips are hauled and the grass gives no sign anybody was there.
