By September the light along Peconic Lane drops low and gold, the farm stands stack the last of the corn, and the vine rows off the Main Road hang heavy. Peconic Garden and Landscaping mows lawns through that season and the ones on either side of it — cutting, trimming, running the edges, gathering leaves once the oaks finally give in. A North Fork lawn has to stand up to sand, sun and a long harvest of visitors, and standing up to it is mostly a matter of arriving when you said you would. There is real pride in a yard that still looks composed at the end of a hot summer: level cut, defined border, nothing shaggy left in the corners. Peconic deserves that, and it gets it.
