Sleet is the local specialty of a Patterson February, coming in sideways past the crossroads where Route 311 meets Route 22 and glazing everything it touches. Byron's Patterson Auto Body meets that weather with a plow, opening driveways and lots, scraping down to bare pavement and spreading salt wherever the glaze wants to hold. An auto body shop spends its days looking at what a bad surface costs, which is reason enough to take the edges seriously and leave nothing half-cleared. Banks get pushed well past the mailbox and back off the corner so sightlines stay open for whoever pulls out next. It is unglamorous work, and the town is quietly better for it every storm.
