Valley fog rides the Chemung on cold nights, and when the temperature drops out from under it, Painted Post wakes up buried. T&J contracting works those hours — blade down, driveways cut open, lots pushed back to the curb line, walkways shoveled to bare ground. Salt goes where the shade keeps ice all day: north-side steps, the bottom of a sloped drive, the strip by the mailbox. It is cold, unglamorous, repetitive work, and there is real pride in a street of open drives at first light while the ridge above town is still white to the treeline. Painted Post, Corning, Erwin, Riverside and Addison are the territory.
