Route 25A heading east out of the village climbs and dips toward Cold Spring Harbor, and during a storm every one of those dips holds slush. Suffolk County Snow Plowing works that corridor and the streets running off it — plowing driveways and lots, opening walkways, breaking up ice and putting down de-icer where the grade wants to send a car sideways. The line between wet snow and freezing rain often sits right about here, so one storm can behave two different ways a mile apart. Arriving early, and coming back, is the whole method. Morning shows it plainly: driveways open, mailboxes reachable, the day allowed to start on time.
