Shore Road at midnight in a storm is headlights, blowing snow, and the sound of water somewhere off to the left. Long Island Snow Plowing runs those nights — driveways opened, walks and stoops cleared, ice knocked back with salt before the wind can set it. Out on the necks and causeways the drifting is the real opponent; a lane cleared at ten can close again by two, so it gets driven twice. Nobody sees the second trip, which is fine, because what they are meant to see is clean pavement in the morning. Then the harbor comes up pink and it becomes somebody else's turn to be awake.
