Down in Sparta the lanes are narrow and the clapboard houses sit close, front yards no bigger than a good rug and every one of them visible from the sidewalk. In June those little lawns green up fast and go shaggy faster, and a week of neglect shows from the corner. This crew keeps them honest — mowing, edging along the walks, trimming hedges back to a clean line, and hauling off what spring and autumn leave behind.
