Route 9W climbs Clausland Mountain in a long grade that ices before anything else in town, and the driveways off it are steeper still. The Plow Guy runs those hills at four in the morning. Plowing here is angles and timing — where to push so the bank does not block the door, when to come back before the melt sets up hard, which walk needs a shovel and salt instead of a blade. Nobody watches the work; they see a clear driveway and a car that makes it to the road. That is the arrangement, and it holds all winter.
