Oppenheim begins where the southern Adirondack foothills lean down toward the Mohawk Valley, and East Canada Creek carries the cold along the town's eastern edge. TW Services works those hill roads in both directions of the year — plowing driveways open before the school buses climb them, then coming back in June to keep the grass short and the edges honest. Winter here does not knock; it arrives sideways off the ridges and packs into every dooryard between Dolgeville and the town line. There is a particular pleasure in a driveway cleared at first light, the banks squared off, the path to the mailbox already shoveled. And a particular pleasure, too, in a summer lawn cut clean to the tree line, the smell of it hanging in the warm air until dusk.
