Onondaga Hill looks out over its own valley — the creek running north, the city haze past it, the lake a flat gleam on a clear afternoon. J&W Property Services keeps lawns across that ground, from the ridge roads down through Nedrow and South Onondaga: mowing on a regular cycle, trimming and edging, and cleanups when the yard turns over in spring and again in autumn. The growing season here is short and generous at once — everything arrives in the last week of May — so keeping ahead of it means being out early and often. There is a plain pleasure in a hillside lawn cut on the diagonal, the walk edged, the clippings swept off the drive before the truck pulls away. Yards on this side of the valley have long views, and a long view deserves a tidy foreground.
