A January night in these hills sounds like a plow two streets over: steel, then quiet, then steel again. Cutting Edge Lawn & Snow Inc. runs both halves of the Oneonta year — plowing driveways and lots, shoveling walks, and spreading salt and sand when the cold drops back into the valley, then mowing, trimming, and cleaning up beds once the ground gives. Storms roll off the Catskill foothills and pool in the low ground along the creek, so the work begins well before the school buses do. There is a particular satisfaction in a drive scraped down to pavement at five in the morning, the car out, nobody late.
