Northville sits at the head of the Great Sacandaga, its Main Street pointed north toward the blue line where the Northville–Placid Trail starts its long walk into the mountains. Bovee Excavating plows the village and the roads running out from it — driveways and lots opened up, walkways cleared, sand and salt put down on the slick pitches near the water. February cold in these foothills makes a snow that packs hard and drifts across every stretch of open ground along the lake. A drive cleared wide, right out to the pavement, saves the homeowner a shovel and the mailbox a burial. When the plow lights swing back toward Main at four in the morning, the town behind them is already open for the day.
