Snow does something particular in midtown: it comes down between the towers in slow spirals, catching the light off the deco crown up at Lexington and 42nd. Novus Maintenance Chrysler Building runs snow and ice work in that stretch of New York — plowing, shoveling entryways, clearing sidewalks and laying down de-icer while the avenue is still empty. Midtown ground never rests, so clearing happens in layers, storm on top of storm, threaded between deliveries, doormen and the early trains out of Grand Central. The measure of the night is a dry lobby floor and a walk nobody slips on. Everything else stays invisible, which is exactly right.
