West of the village the Helderberg escarpment stands out of the farmland like a pale limestone wall, and by late afternoon it throws the light back down over every yard in New Scotland. 518Landscapes works beneath that ridge — mowing the long open lawns off Route 85, running the edger until the seam between grass and gravel is one unbroken line, and hauling away what the first hard October wind brings down. The ground here is thin over rock on the high side and deep in the creek bottoms, and a lawn will tell you which one it is sitting on; reading that is most of the job. The best hour is the last pass of a summer evening, stripes running true toward the cliffs while swallows work the hayfield next door. Nothing about it is complicated — a yard, a mower, and a standard to hold to.
